I hope he’s at least there so he can see her in that stunning dress that doesn’t at all resemble a wedding gown.

This symbolism can mean one of two things. Either it was solidifying the fact that Elena considers Damon part of her family, a Gilbert, and so she trusts him with her family heirloom even if it’s unconsciously since she doesn’t really want to remember family and all she’s lost. OR Damon’s going to need that ring later on when he becomes a human.
